KC Confidential Is a 5 Star example as to what makes a good Crime Story. And this is the very essence of Film Noir. The story is tightly scripted, the
...
crew of actors - well chosen, & in the hands of a very capable director, results in a winning combination. The plot is 1st rate - A Police Detective Forced into Retirement concocts a plan of an exceptional well staged Armored car robbery , where no shots are fired, no one get hurt(The armored car Guards get roughed up a little), and a Ex-con is framed for the robbery, after a brutal interrogation by the police, he swears revenge & starts hunting down the perps involved. He succeeds. There are no lag spots in this picture AT ALL, so KUDO's to cast & crew!!

OK. I've got to say, I realize it's an integral part of the plot, but the fact that Mr. Big insists that all three hardened criminals accept a paltry amount
...
of money and go to a foreign country without knowing his identity is maybe the most unbelievable plot point ever. I mean, c'mon. Here's basically what he says..."OK, guys. I know you don't know who I am, but what I'm going to do is keep all this money for an indeterminate amount of time while you leave the country and maybe I'll hit you up later on". Nobody....I mean NOBODY...ever...EVER...would have gone for that. It just killed the entire movie for me.

This movie keeps you engaged throughout. Super solid acting, a plot full of twists and surprises, and no drifting off into sappiness or weak-willed stupidity
...
as so many modern films are wont to do (did you see that last "James Bond" movie, oh brother!). In this movie everybody is a tough guy who really is a tough guy. No compromise. I like that, and so will you. Watch this movie. It's truly one of the great ones.

I sat down and watched it with my wife and we both enjoyed it. I can see many story elements that have been reused in later films.

clever robbery plot: he recruits 3 looser ex cons on the run~ including Jack Elam and Neville Brand~ who ALL wear masks so no one knows who the other is~ no chance of turning against each other. using a FAKE flower truck they halt the armored truck and rob it and get away clean by driving the flower truck into a semi~ with a clean get away they are to meet in Mexico to divy up the dough later only clue is a half of playing CARD KING to prove their id~ JOHN PAYNE as the ex con REAL floral truck driver who is the patsy and gets arrested for a crime he did not comit. later released he travels to Mexico on a tip~ and takes the ID of Elam~ to get rich and EVEN~ the slant on this one is Tim Foster is an ex cop who planned it and carried out the crime~ for the REWARD not the loot~ add his overly goody goody daughter who finds Payne *facinating*~ this is a great movie~ the plot is solid and the characters are first rate~ if you want a excellent heist movie~ this is it~ Preston Foster is Tim Foster is EX COP who wants to make crime finally pay for him~ I GIVE THIS ONE 5 STARS ALL THE WAY~

This is genuine film noir classic. It possesses all the elements. It is great from start to finish and the film techniques are film noir throughout.

I was lucky enough to write, produce & directed Coleen Gray in 1977 and 1978 Forgotten Lady and Mother, two indie films I shot in Houston, Texas. She was very unsure of her status in film history, now at 88, I believe she accepts her contribution to film is quite profound. Thanks for sharing this film on archive.org.
